EaEarth Day San Antonio, 2009
Earth Day is Saturday, April 18 Woodlawn Lake Park 10:00a.m. -4:00 p.m.
When VOICE helped organize the first Earth Day San Antonio in 1990, our participation ensured that the event would be truly eco-friendly and animal-friendly by having a VEGETARIAN Earth Day. We are pleased that the tradition continues...
*************************************************************************************************************************
VOICE will again be participating in the annual Earth Day celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park. If you care to help us set up, clean up or help staff the VOICE booth, call the VOICE phone (210) 737-3138.
Hardberger's Last Chance to do the Right Thing....
Free Lucky Rally in front of City Hall
Saturday, May 2, 2009 set-up at 11:30, rally noon to 1:00 p.m.
We've met with the Mayor's aides. We've met with some of the City Council members. We've met with the Editorial Board of the local newspaper. Everyone we've talked to seems to agree that Lucky deserves to be moved to the Sanctuary.
Yet, the Mayor still refuses to meet with us. Our sources tell us that Animal Care Services Board was essentially silenced by the Assistant City Manager. Our FREE LUCKY banner, that had been on display around the city for most of the past year, is now banned by the city!
WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF? That Lucky will be in a better situation than she has been for the last 49 years? That the care at the zoo will be recognized as inferior to that at the sanctuary? Do the Zoo and the City WANT to maintain their status as the #1 WORST ZOO for elephants in the country? Where is the compassion we thought we saw in candidate Hardberger who pushed for NO KILL?
We are asking Mayor Hardberger to do what he is legally allowed to do by the terms of the contract between the Zoo and the City of San Antonio, and investigate the deaths of Ginny and Alport and prevent the same horrible fate from happening to Lucky.
Overwhelmingly, the Citizens of San Antonio we have talked to agree that Lucky should be allowed to retire to the Sanctuary. Isn't Hardberger supposed to represent the wishes of his constituency?
We are asking Mayor Hardberger to do the right thing, the compassionate thing, before he leaves office. Urge the Zoo to release Lucky to the Elephant Sanctuary to live out the remaining (few) years of her life. Lucky has sacrificed her entire life for the entertainment of citizens and visitors to San Antonio and has lined the pockets of those who profit from her incarceration. After almost 50 years in the same enclosure, certainly a little bit of freedom is the least that she deserves.
HARDBERGER'S LAST CHANCE --Free Lucky Rally. Lucky needs you to speak up for her now.

Fur Free Friday 2008
For the 20th year in a row, VOICE sponsors FFF. The day after Thanksgiving is promoted as the biggest shopping day of the year, but animal advocates know it as "Fur-Free Friday," a day to remind consumers to leave all fur and fur-trimmed products off their holiday shopping lists. What better way to burn off that extra piece of tofurky than to join local activists in educating shoppers about the cruelty of fur and asking them to shop compassionately?
Posters and leaflets will be provided, so just bring yourself and anyone you can recruit to join you.
When: Friday, November 28, 2008, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Where: Morris Kaye & Sons Furs, 555 E. Basse Road at Treeline Park (north of the Quarry Mall)
Theme: Be Comfortable in Your Own Skin....Don't Wear Fur!
The suffering and deaths of feeling animals is not worth the price of an expensive coat or the fur trim on a jacket collar, so please don't pay for the blood of innocent animals. Commercial fur and fur trim are stolen from animals who are trapped in the wild or confined in fur mills, raised in wire mesh cages and exposed to seasonal temperature extremes. These are the real fashion victims - injected with weed killer, burned by anal or vaginal electrocution, and trapped and clubbed to satisfy the vanity and greed of selfish human beings.
Join us afterwards, for a lovely vegan meal and socializing at Whole Foods!

April/May 2008
Please join VOICE for Animals in celebration of Earth Day at Woodlawn Lake Park on Saturday, April 19, from 10 am to 4 pm. Our theme this year is "Celebrate Life, Respect the Earth -- Go Vegan"!
We will have two booths, one will focus attention on thinking green by going vegan. Since 1990, VOICE has taken an active role in helping to organize San Antonio Earth Day and keeping it vegetarian. Of the many changes each one of us can make to help our planet, the one with the greatest impact is adopting a vegetarian/vegan diet. Come by our booth to learn more.
We will have a variety of literature available with healthful, cruelty-free, Earth-friendly recipes, VOICE merchandise, and a raffle.
Our second booth is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of Lucky, the lone Asian female elephant at the San Antonio Zoo (for more information about Lucky visit http://voiceforanimals.org/freelucky.htm).
VOICE is planning a special event at Brackenridge Park on Sunday, May 11, from 1 pm to 5 pm asking for the release of Lucky to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. More details to come soon!
If you wish to volunteer to help staff our booths or collect signatures on our Free Lucky! petitions, contact VOICE at 210-737-3138.

Rally against the animal cruelty in
the Stockshow and Rodeo

Meet on the concrete island opposite the main
entrance to the Freeman Coliseum/ AT&T Center on Houston street.
Carpool if possible; parking available on
residential streets west of the coliseum, across the railroad
tracks. Due to high traffic, it's best to arrive

Call 210 737-3138 for more info.

FREE LUCKY! Demo. Saturday, December
22
Set-up 11:30, Rally noon to one.
In front of the San Antonio Zoo's main entrance.
Signs will be available and literature will be provided. Call
737-3138 for more info.
We are asking that the San Antonio Zoo release
Lucky, the lone elephant that remains in their elephant exhibit, and
allow her to live the remainder of her life in a sanctuary. She is
currently essentially in solitary confinement, one of the worst
punishments meted out to criminals! We are also asking that the zoo
permanently close its elephant exhibit, as have other more
progressive zoos. No animal deserves to have his or her freedom
stolen away, but elephants are particularly vulnerable. In the wild,
they travel large distances and live in herds with others. No zoo is
able to properly provide these necessary conditions.

Anti-Puppy Mill Protest!
Saturday, Dec. 22nd and Sunday, Dec.
23rd from 2-4pm. We will have signs, flyers
and shelter/rescue info. too.
We'll meet at 2pm in the
parking lot behind Petland - there is lots of parking.
I
know 2 days may not be feasible for most people, but if folks would
just commit to one day or the other - even for an hour - we feel
that it will make a huge impact since this is without a doubt THE
"money making" weekend for the store. (They have advertised "65
puppies for sale!" - YUCK!)
We had a lot of positive feedback
from yesterday's demo (Sun., Dec. 16th from 1-3pm). Four or five
groups of people stopped and asked us about local shelters and some
folks even decided not to shop there for any pet supplies. Not to
mention all the cars that drove by and saw our signs!
San Antonio killed thousands of homeless animals
last year and will again next year as a result of negligent
breeding. Many of the animals in local petstores came from puppy
mills. To learn more, visit HSUS

Help PETA spread the "Naked Truth" about KFC at an exciting
demonstration taking place in San Antonio on Thursday!
I will
be leading a demonstration against KFC wearing only a banner saying,
"The Naked Truth: KFC Tortures Chicks," on the front and reading,
"Turn Your Back on KFC Cruelty," on the back. This protest is part
of PETA's campaign urging KFC to stop breaking birds' wings and
legs, scalding them to death, and abusing them in other
reprehensible ways.
Where: KFC, 5211 De Zavala Road, San Antonio, TX When:
Thursday, December 13, at 10:45 a.m. What to bring: You, your
friends, and your family members (protest materials will be
provided)
I hope you can spare an hour to help urge people in
your area to boycott KFC. This will also be a great chance to meet
other people in your community who are concerned about cruelty to
animals. You can direct questions about the demonstration and RSVP
to me at AshleyB@peta.org.
If you can't make it to the demonstration but want to help, you
can also become an online activist. Get code to display videos on
your blog and banners for your Web page, and learn other ways to
help spread the word with a simple click of your mouse.
To learn more about the campaign, please visit KentuckyFriedCruelty.com Thanks
for everything you do to help animals!
