Free Lucky Rally in front of City Hall
Saturday, May 2, 2009 set-up at 11:30, rally noon to 1:00 p.m.
We've met with the Mayor's aides. We've met with some of the City Council members. We've met with the Editorial Board of the local newspaper. Everyone we've talked to seems to agree that Lucky deserves to be moved to the Sanctuary.
WHAT ARE THEY AFRAID OF? That Lucky will be in a better situation than she has been for the last 49 years? That the care at the zoo will be recognized as inferior to that at the sanctuary? Do the Zoo and the City WANT to maintain their status as the #1 WORST ZOO for elephants in the country? Where is the compassion we thought we saw in candidate Hardberger who pushed for NO KILL? We are asking Mayor Hardberger to do what he is legally allowed to do by the terms of the contract between the Zoo and the City of San Antonio, and investigate the deaths of Ginny and Alport and prevent the same horrible fate from happening to Lucky. Overwhelmingly, the Citizens of San Antonio we have talked to agree that Lucky should be allowed to retire to the Sanctuary. Isn't Hardberger supposed to represent the wishes of his constituency? We are asking Mayor Hardberger to do the right thing, the compassionate thing, before he leaves office. Urge the Zoo to release Lucky to the Elephant Sanctuary to live out the remaining (few) years of her life. Lucky has sacrificed her entire life for the entertainment of citizens and visitors to San Antonio and has lined the pockets of those who profit from her incarceration. After almost 50 years in the same enclosure, certainly a little bit of freedom is the least that she deserves.

Fur Free Friday 2008 For the 20th year in a row, VOICE sponsors FFF. The day after Thanksgiving is promoted as the biggest shopping day of the year, but animal advocates know it as "Fur-Free Friday," a day to remind consumers to leave all fur and fur-trimmed products off their holiday shopping lists. What better way to burn off that extra piece of tofurky than to join local activists in educating shoppers about the cruelty of fur and asking them to shop compassionately? Posters and leaflets will be provided, so just bring yourself and anyone you can recruit to join you.

We will have two booths, one will focus attention on thinking green by going vegan. Since 1990, VOICE has taken an active role in helping to organize San Antonio Earth Day and keeping it vegetarian. Of the many changes each one of us can make to help our planet, the one with the greatest impact is adopting a vegetarian/vegan diet. Come by our booth to learn more.

message to breeders that animals are not commodities to be bought

event. On Friday, November 2, an African elephant named Alport died as a result of undetermined causes at the San Antonio Zoo. We need your help to urge the zoo to close its elephant exhibit and send Lucky, its remaining elephant, to a sanctuary. Please join us for a demonstration at the San Antonio Zoo
tomorrow: Because of space limitations, zoos no matter how well intentioned they may be simply cannot provide for elephants' physical and social needs. Zoos' lack of space creates health problems for elephants, such as arthritis, foot and joint diseases, and psychological distress (as is evidenced by their repetitive swaying, head-bobbing, and pacing). A sanctuary can offer Lucky hundreds of acres of natural habitat to roam, ponds to bathe in, fresh vegetation and foraging opportunities, and the company of many other elephants. Join VOICE for our annual Fur Free Friday protest on November
23rd, from Noon to 1 pm. We will hold a peaceful protest on the
public sidewalk in front of Morris Kaye & Sons (Texas' Largest
Fur Manufacturers) (north of the Quarry Mall by Basse @ Jones
Maltsberger). Local media will be invited to let viewers know the
