April/May 2008

Please join VOICE for Animals in celebration of Earth Day at Woodlawn Lake Park on Saturday, April 19, from 10 am to 4 pm.  Our theme this year is "Celebrate Life, Respect the Earth -- Go Vegan"!

tulipWe will have two booths, one will focus attention on thinking green by going vegan.  Since 1990, VOICE has taken an active role in helping to organize San Antonio Earth Day and keeping it vegetarian.  Of the many changes each one of us can make to help our planet, the one with the greatest impact is adopting a vegetarian/vegan diet.  Come by our booth to learn more.

We will have a variety of literature available with healthful, cruelty-free, Earth-friendly recipes, VOICE merchandise, and a raffle.

Our second booth is dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of Lucky, the lone Asian female elephant at the San Antonio Zoo (for more information about Lucky visit http://voiceforanimals.org/freelucky.htm).

VOICE is planning a special event at Brackenridge Park on Sunday, May 11, from 1 pm to 5 pm asking for the release of Lucky to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee.  More details to come soon!

If you wish to volunteer to help staff our booths or collect signatures on our Free Lucky! petitions, contact VOICE at 210-737-3138.

February, 2008

Rally against the animal cruelty in the Stockshow and Rodeo

Meet on the concrete island opposite the main entrance to the Freeman Coliseum/ AT&T Center on Houston street. Carpool if possible; parking available on residential streets west of the coliseum, across the railroad tracks. Due to high traffic, it's best to arrive from the west side of the coliseum.

Call 210 737-3138 for more info.

FREE LUCKY! Demo. Saturday, December 22

Set-up 11:30, Rally noon to one.

In front of the San Antonio Zoo's main entrance. Signs will be available and literature will be provided. Call 737-3138 for more info.

We are asking that the San Antonio Zoo release Lucky, the lone elephant that remains in their elephant exhibit, and allow her to live the remainder of her life in a sanctuary. She is currently essentially in solitary confinement, one of the worst punishments meted out to criminals! We are also asking that the zoo permanently close its elephant exhibit, as have other more progressive zoos. No animal deserves to have his or her freedom stolen away, but elephants are particularly vulnerable. In the wild, they travel large distances and live in herds with others. No zoo is able to properly provide these necessary conditions.

Anti-Puppy Mill Protest!

Saturday, Dec. 22nd and Sunday, Dec. 23rd from 2-4pm.
We will have signs, flyers and shelter/rescue info. too.

We'll meet at 2pm in the parking lot behind Petland - there is lots of parking.

I know 2 days may not be feasible for most people, but if folks would just commit to one day or the other - even for an hour - we feel that it will make a huge impact since this is without a doubt THE "money making" weekend for the store. (They have advertised "65 puppies for sale!" - YUCK!)

We had a lot of positive feedback from yesterday's demo (Sun., Dec. 16th from 1-3pm). Four or five groups of people stopped and asked us about local shelters and some folks even decided not to shop there for any pet supplies. Not to mention all the cars that drove by and saw our signs!

San Antonio killed thousands of homeless animals last year and will again next year as a result of negligent breeding. Many of the animals in local petstores came from puppy mills. To learn more, visit HSUS get the info on puppy mills

Help PETA spread the "Naked Truth" about KFC at an exciting demonstration taking place in San Antonio on Thursday!

I will be leading a demonstration against KFC wearing only a banner saying, "The Naked Truth: KFC Tortures Chicks," on the front and reading, "Turn Your Back on KFC Cruelty," on the back. This protest is part of PETA's campaign urging KFC to stop breaking birds' wings and legs, scalding them to death, and abusing them in other reprehensible ways.

Where: KFC, 5211 De Zavala Road, San Antonio, TX
When: Thursday, December 13, at 10:45 a.m.
What to bring: You, your friends, and your family members (protest materials will be provided)

I hope you can spare an hour to help urge people in your area to boycott KFC. This will also be a great chance to meet other people in your community who are concerned about cruelty to animals. You can direct questions about the demonstration and RSVP to me at AshleyB@peta.org.

If you can't make it to the demonstration but want to help, you can also become an online activist. Get code to display videos on your blog and banners for your Web page, and learn other ways to help spread the word with a simple click of your mouse.

To learn more about the campaign, please visit KentuckyFriedCruelty.com
Thanks for everything you do to help animals!

Ashley

While we at VOICE for Animals don't recommend that you give any animal as a gift, if you choose to welcome a dog (or cat) into your home, please consider adopting from a shelter rather than buying from a petstore or breeder. Not only will you be rescuing an animal from a death sentence, you will be sending the message to breeders that animals are not commodities to be bought and sold!

Action Alert: Elephant Dies at
San Antonio Zoo

Please Join VOICE and Local Activists in Demonstration this Friday

Please join us for a demonstration at the San Antonio Zoo tomorrow:
When: Friday, November 9, 11:45 am -1 pm
Where: San Antonio Zoo, 3903 N. St. Mary's (in Brackenridge Park)

Contact Noah Cooper at 512-529-0800 to RSVP or

VOICE at 210-737-3138 for more information about the event.
Dear Supporters,

On Friday, November 2, an African elephant named Alport died as a result of undetermined causes at the San Antonio Zoo. We need your help to urge the zoo to close its elephant exhibit and send Lucky, its remaining elephant, to a sanctuary.

Please join us for a demonstration at the San Antonio Zoo tomorrow:
When: Friday, November 9, 11:45 am -1 pm
Where: San Antonio Zoo, 3903 N. St. Mary's (in Brackenridge Park)

Because of space limitations, zoos no matter how well intentioned they may be simply cannot provide for elephants' physical and social needs. Zoos' lack of space creates health problems for elephants, such as arthritis, foot and joint diseases, and psychological distress (as is evidenced by their repetitive swaying, head-bobbing, and pacing). A sanctuary can offer Lucky hundreds of acres of natural habitat to roam, ponds to bathe in, fresh vegetation and foraging opportunities, and the company of many other elephants.

Please help Lucky by attending this urgent demonstration. Contact Noah Cooper at 512-529-0800 to RSVP or VOICE at 210-737-3138 for more information about the event.

Friday, November 23 Noon - 1 pm (set -up starts at 11:30)
Fur Free Friday Protest - Fur: so barbaric, only a caveman would wear it!

Join VOICE for our annual Fur Free Friday protest on November 23rd, from Noon to 1 pm. We will hold a peaceful protest on the public sidewalk in front of Morris Kaye & Sons (Texas' Largest Fur Manufacturers) (north of the Quarry Mall by Basse @ Jones Maltsberger). Local media will be invited to let viewers know the horrors of fur. We will provide posters!

VOICE will be displaying a "Don't Buy Fur!" banner in Alamo Heights on Broadway by Cloverleaf Street for the month of December.

Every year on the day after Thanksgiving for the last two decades, thousands of people around the U.S. have held demonstrations, marches, vigils, and other activities for Fur Free Friday to protest a global multi-billion dollar industry that kills over 40 million animals annually. Holding this national day of action on the busiest shopping day of the year allows activists to reach the greatest number of consumers, including those who may be thinking about buying fur as a gift or for their own wardrobe.

After the protest, we will get together at Whole Foods Market at the Quarry Mall for a bite to eat. Whole Foods Market offers many vegan options.

Hope to see you there,

For information about the horrors of fur visit http://www.furkills.org/

VOICE sends our best wishes to Joel Hailey who leaves us to work with his own Joel Hailey Foundation. Good luck from all of us!
